1 Billion Flash Enables Devices – Adobe Launches Flash Lite 3

Something in the Adobe press release announcing Flash Lite 3 today caught my eye today that is worth discussing (IMHO):

Adobe expects more than one billion Flash enabled devices to be available by 2010.

The implications of 1 Billion+ devices being Flash enabled by 2010 are staggering.

Take for example the total amount of iPods sold: 110 Million as of September 2007 (wikipedia) This means that about TEN TIMES that amount of mobile products will have flash enabled interfaces able to decode flash video. Now look at YouTube, which arguably currently IS Internet video, uses flash as its delivery method. This means that in 3 years Flash will be the standard delivery method for mobile streaming content. There will not be a mainstream device on the planet that does not use this at least in tandem with other delivery options.

From a customer standpoint:

1. It’s fast (#1 complaint in the mobile web space is speed)
2. It’s ubiquitous – (YouTube example above)
3. It’s efficient (have to keep the engineers happy

I have had many discussions over the use of flash with webmasters, designers, marketing people, direct clients and the jury is still out. Recently MTV switched their entire website platform off of Flash reverting back to HTML. Although they have put some flash back onto the site.

I see the benefits of using flash increasing all the time. I understand the need for meta data for robot crawlers and I understand the efficiency and compliance of CSS. I do however see a much more influential driver to backed development: The User. People just want stuff to work.

According to a Millward Brown survey, conducted June 2007, Adobe claims Flash reaches 99.3% of desktop Internet users. (wikipedia) This is almost unheard of in any industry. Adobe is definitely a company to watch, and I hope this puts using Flash back on your radar.
