Mobile Video: The New China?

This has been a tremendously eventful week for mobile phones and video content. All the big players are now officially involved: Viacom, CBS, News Corp. Sprint, Verizon, Cingular, etc. Access to news or entertainment programming will be available to mobile users via cellular provider or via subscription from the media conglomerates depending on the deal.
 
This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone though. The U.S. is way behind in the mobile phone game and has been for years. American cellular phone users have been downloading mp3 quality music and ring tones for a while and mobile users in Asia and Europe have been sharing video content for over a year.
 
Who will benefit from mobile content? This could be a fantastic opportunity for media companies to promote their current programming, new shows, and company brand. I think mobile video will prove to be especially effective as a means to reach teens and generation Y.

Richard Siklos of the New York Times recently professed that “wireless is the new China.” Sounds pretty exciting doesn’t it? Personally, I’m not so sure that I’m all that interested. I like the idea of being able to watch my desired programming or news whenever or wherever but I’m pretty sure that I will still prefer the big screen for movies and my favorite shows. Similarly, I love my blackberry but still prefer to type emails and surf the web on my computer.
 
I don’t think that mobile video will prove itself as the “New Fontier” or the “New China” as a marekting medium in 2006. However, very soon phones and pda’s will capable of broadband speed, multiple gigs of memory. Already some phones are able to receive live broadcast streams and the developments in 2006 are only the beginning. One analyst predicts the mobile market (video, music, games) to be valued at $40 Billion by 2010.
 
Suggestion to marketers and media folk: keep an eye on Europe and Asia if you want to see the future of mobile.
