The Social Media Tsunami

My friend Mike Singleton just coined a new phrase which I like which happens after you meet someone for the first time, or correspond with them online.  It represents the full monty of online connections that can occur.  These usually happen in fast succession resulting in an avalanche of connection options coming from one person in your inbox.

This includes a wave of invites from the following services;

  1. The twitter follow
  2. The tweet with a mention
  3. The LinkedIn connection
  4. The Facebook friend request
  5. The Foursquare friend request
  6. The Plaxo friend request

The funny part about this is that it can happen after an email exchange, a tweet, or just an exchange of a business card.  I think its socially interesting to say the least and this is of course half in jest, but I thought I would post the term here because it happens so often.

Did I leave something out?

This is a fantastic — and fantastically-named — observation. I’d add the Yelp friending and the (particularly-dangerous) Quora follow to your list. Tumblr and delicious seem less vulnerable to this sort of friendly onslaught, for whatever reason.

I’ve seen the same thing, with people slowly creeping through your online life. One additional touchpoint is your personal site or blog… I’ll notice people will go back in time and comment on posts I’ve authored. Finally, some of the less cowardly will even send you an email mentioning something that they learned about you “I didn’t know you built websites…” etc.

While we all open ourselves up to it, it still feels somewhat creepy to see this happen to you.

Good call – there were a few others but a quick straw poll came out with
these as the biggest offenders. I also didn’t want to name services that
    had smaller followings.

Skype is another that I see.

Surprised plaxo still gets a mention today, I dont see it so much anymore.

Interesting not on Skype – I don’t think I have gotten those invites. Are
these via emial? (maybe I turned this off awhile back though)

    Great observation.
I do think there is value in adding someone on social networks after you’ve met in person, simply since it does make keeping in touch much easier. But as in everything, there is balance to be achieved.

so true. Add to those “Someone is following you on Quora” and “Someone posted a plan on Plancast”. I’ve been using SaneBox to filter out all the 3rd party junk into a separate mailbox in gmail and it makes my life so much better!

I will check this out – sounds definitely necessary for tech/geek/service
    junkies like us!
