During the latest episode of Family Guy Fox showed advertising during the commercial breaks as well as during the show for www.TakeBackTheFuture.com. After checking out the website it is clear it is for the new Terminator show that is coming out on Fox in January 2008. It is now also listed on IMDB officially.
Looking at some of the other sites covering the TakeBackTheFuture Viral Campaign
It is now clear that the show has the premise of the time after Terminator 2 takes place and is subtitled “The Sarah Connor Chronicles”
It turns out that some advertising was also done virally during episodes of Prison Break in 2007. I think this was a cool move by Fox to generate some interest in a show that may not have gotten the advertising attention that it deserves. Most people I have spoken to expect this show to fail. Meanwhile, as a huge fan of the Terminator series I will definitely give it a shot.
What did Fox have to spend to get a viral campaign going for the new Terminator show? I am sure that information will not come out, but the benefit is already out on the net. Multiple site’s are posting about the movie and it is clear they are getting the attention they wanted.
As for the website, showing 1259 days as of 11/06/07, meaning the date in question is Monday, April 18th 2011.
I think we are already seeing a higher amount of these type of viral ads. Given the success of the show and the efficacy of the ads as tracked on the blogs and all over the Internet will determine the future of such campaigns. As traditional methods begin to slow for network show premiere’s it is great to see Fox thinking outside the box. Definitely a sign of Fox doing some Marketing 2.0
